PhilosophyWe expect our players to be 100% committed. Our goal is to compete at the highest levels in our sport and maximize exposure of our players to college coaches for possible scholarships. Players must constantly work to earn and keep their position on the team.
Team BioLawrence “LoJo” Johnson: LoJo began pole vaulting in 1989 and since has earned records on all stages and led the charge to return the US to the international medal podium with two Olympic appearances including a silver medal performance in Sydney, a world title, 7 US national titles, 4 NCAA titles, six-time conference champion, six-time All-American and seven-time All-SEC selection. He was a three-time SEC All-Academic team member. Johnson graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Sport Management, and minor in Marketing. In 2011, LoJo resigned from the University of South Carolina to further grow Team VA and VaultAssaultOnline.com. VAO is an online resource he conceived to promote pole vault safety, development, and performance online. While at USC, during his four seasons at South Carolina, Johnson coached his athletes to two SEC titles, five All-America honors, 17 NCAA qualifiers, an NCAA East Region silver medalist, an SEC Championship silver medalist and five SEC Championship bronze medalists. LoJo has now directed his focus on coaching athletes to the high school and elite levels as well as providing assistance at the collegiate level. LoJo was always a student to the sport while in college and remain so as his experience progressed. LoJo has learned and trained under some of the greatest track and field coaches in modern times including, Head Coach Doug Brown (UT), Head Coach Bill Webb (UT), Coach Jim Bemiller (UT), Coach Roman Botcharnikov, Coach Vince Anderson (T-A&M), Coach John Smith (UCLA), and a multitude of mentors. "One of my memorable college coaching experiences was to hear rumors that LoJo was a great pole vaulter, but it doesn't mean he can coach. After my first season, those rumors died quickly. " - LoJo Lawrence Johnson was also a Volunteer Assistant Coach at Christopher Newport University in Newpt News, VA. Christina Johnson: Christina Johnson in addition to assisting with Team VA, Christina was a Volunteer Assistant Coach at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. Christina Johnson was the Volunteer Assistant Coach at the University of South Carolina assisting the pole vault for three years. Christina also assisted in the physical and technical development of high school athletes within the state of South Carolina, including South Carolina’s number 2 all time pole vault male and female performer, and now continues to do so with Team VA and VaultAssaultOnline.com. Christina is Team VA's manager. She also assists in coaching and developing all Team VA athletes. Christina has studied pole vault with LoJo for 13 years both in front and behind the camera during his training sessions. Christina currently resides in Virginia Beach, VA with Lawrence and their 5 children.
